Democracia U.S.A.

Arizona

Arizona became an imperative choice for expansion due to its unique Latino cultural heritage and the vitriolic anti-immigrant attacks felt everyday by Arizonans. Democracia U.S.A. saw great civic engagement potential in the state, and in 2006, D-USA began operations in Tucson and Pima County under the local expert leadership of Arizona State Director Alonzo Morado. In 2009, D-USA is beginning operations in the city of Phoenix and Maricopa County. As part of our 300,000 voter registration goal in 2010, D-USA will register a minimum of 30,000 new Latino voters and GOTV 27,000over the next 2 years in Arizona. Democracia USA’s work is changing the political landscape of Phoenix and the entire state of Arizona.

Our field experience in Arizona has demonstrated a need to address a number of issues, specifically immigration, census, redistricting, education and the environment. This year for example, D-USA trained a number of young Latinos from Arizona on the importance of advocating for local environmental issues and three of those young people attended this year’s national Power Shift Conference in Washington, DC to empower youth on issues of climate change and the environment. Also in 2009, D-USA inaugurated its Arizona Leadership Academy to train and develop 13 local grassroots Latino leaders in partnership with the Center for Progressive Leadership, including practical, hands-on campaign training with issue-based modules as part of the comprehensive curriculum to train the state’s future Latino leaders.
