Statement on Hispanic Woman Who was Held in Arkansas Jail for Four Days without Food and Water
Miami, FL March 14, 2007 – Democracia USA strongly condemns the treatment of Adriana Torres-Flores, a Latina immigrant mother who was recently abandoned in an Arkansas jail for four days without supervision, food or water. Ms. Torres-Flores, 38, slept on the floor with only a shoe for a pillow, and with nothing to drink except her own urine, as reported by The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. There was no bathroom in the cell and a bailiff had apparently forgotten that he placed Ms. Torres-Flores in it last Thursday, and simply left her in the empty courthouse, in Fayetteville, over the weekend. Democracia USA’s President, Jorge Mursuli, stated, “The bigoted rhetoric against immigrants that is increasingly becoming an acceptable part of our public dialogue feeds this intolerance and leads to these situations where human beings are psychologically and physically denigrated. We call on local, state and federal officials along with all citizens to change the tone of the debate on immigration, before this country slides further into an abyss of racial profiling and physical attacks against undocumented – and unprotected -- immigrants.”
