Town Hall Meeting in Osceola FL
A TOWN HALL ESTABLISHING THE LATINO AGENDA FOR THE 2008 ELECTIONS
ORLANDO, FL - Since 2000, Florida has played a critical role the election process of the President of the United States. Latino/a leaders concerned with voter suppression, in an effort to increase Latino voting participation in the upcoming elections, are uniting to discuss the issues affecting our communities. For this reason, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) decided to bring its 17th National Convention to Orlando and partner with local Latino groups to have an honest discussion about the future of the Latino communities across Florida and America.
As part of a national and statewide movement to address issues affecting Latinos/as, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), the Orlando Central Labor Council, Democracia USA and Latino Leadership are calling for a community town hall meeting this August 6, 2008 at the Asociación Borinqueña de Florida Central at 1865 N. Econlockhatchee trail Orlando, FL.
The media has highlighted the need for Immigration Reform as highest on the agenda for Latinos, but the reality is that the kitchen-tables issues that are affecting all Americans are also top concerns for Latinos/as throughout the nation.
“Latinos/as are critical to the economy and the growth of the State of Florida and also face the same issues affecting all Americans: the need for a sustainable economy, a quality education for all, health care reform and a safer and stronger America,” stated Milton Rosado, LCLAA National President. “We are here to raise awareness of these issues, how they affect our communities and set the agenda for the upcoming election cycle and for the future of the nation.”
“Families across America, particularly in the Latino communities, are feeling the effects of an economy that has not been kind to the middle class” and “We are ready to fight to ensure that every Latino vote counts” said Maritza Sanz, Executive Director of Latino Leadership Inc. The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, LCLAA, is the home of the Latino Labor Movement. LCLAA is a national Latino organization representing the interests of over 1.7 million Latino trade unionists throughout the country and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. LCLAA was founded in 1973 and is America’s premiere national organization for Latino workers and their families. LCLAA advocates for the rights of all workers seeking justice in the workplace and their communities. LCLAA is a constituency group representing Latino workers in both the AFL-CIO and Change to Win Federation.
